Renovation and Rebuild
The Sportsman Tavern, located at 683 Edgar Avenue in Ronceverte, West Virginia, is one of the state’s oldest bars, originally established in the 1920s.
After a period of closure, local developers Mark Trent and Dan Withrow purchased and extensively renovated the tavern, reopening it in mid-February 2023.
The revitalized Sportsman Tavern offers a welcoming atmosphere with a blend of historical charm and modern amenities. Patrons can enjoy a selection of over 80 beer and wine options, vintage pool tables, pinball and arcade machines, and a 20-foot shuffleboard from the 1930s.
The interior features original brick walls, a refinished concrete floor, and tables with built-in chess and checkers boards.
The Dawg House, is a beloved eatery specializing in gourmet hot dogs and American comfort food. Owners Brittany McCulley and Lee Carter began their venture as a food truck, serving fairs and festivals across southern West Virginia. In early 2024, they transitioned to a brick-and-mortar location inside The Sportsman Tavern, offering patrons a cozy dining experience.
The menu features specialty hot dogs, including “The Ebony,” topped with chili, beer cheese, ketchup, and mustard. All hot dogs are priced at $4. Additional offerings include burgers, a buffalo chicken sandwich, crab rangoon dip, nachos, and loaded pretzel bites.
Committed to providing affordable, quality meals, The Dawg House continues to be a favorite among locals and visitors in the Ronceverte and Lewisburg areas.
